Coming Up: Weequahic Walking Tour

Newark history buff, Jeff Bennett, writes in to say he’s got a walking tour of Weequahic scheduled for May 19th! From the Newark History website:

The beginning of the tour will skirt Weequahic Park, learning about the history of this neighborhood and park. Divident Hill is the perfect place to start since it represents Newark’s colonial early history. The history of Weequahic is written in its streets, so Lyons Avenue will represent this area’s colonial history, Mapes Avenue will represent the area’s pre-Civil War days. The statue of Franklin Murphy represents of the founding of Weequahic Park and the Frank Bock homesite will represent the development of the neighborhood. After the Frank Bock homesite on Custer Ave, we will walk back along Elizabeth Avenue, and make a righ Chancellor Avenue to Weequahic High School and Phillip Roth’s old house. In general, the first half of the tour will be about the development of Weequahic, Weequahic Park, and Newark, the second half will be more about Weequahic’s Jewish days. If time allows, we’ll return to our starting point via Lyons Avenue.

The tour will last 2 hours, 30 minutes and will run in all weathers except torrential rain. If the weather is threatening, please check the front page of www.newarkhistory.com for an announcement of cancellation.

The tour will run you $5 per person—not a bad deal for a 2 1/2 hour tour on a sunny Saturday afternoon. :)

Woo! Go Jeff! I may not be around for this tour but hopefully it won’t be too much of a loss since I was on the first Weequahic tour.
