NJ.com: Police chase car and officer’s gun from Newark to Brooklyn
A Newark police officer dropped his gun inside a suspect’s car during a shootout tonight, then chased the injured driver into Brooklyn, where the suspect crashed on trendy “restaurant row” in the Boerum Hill neighborhood, according to police.
Several backup cars from Newark, Jersey City, New Jersey State Police, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and New York Police Department joined the case as it stretched from Newark, onto Routes 1&9, through the Holland Tunnel, along Canal Street across Manhattan and into Brooklyn, police said.
It began at 5:25 p.m. at the intersection of Albert Avenue and Joseph Street in Newark, where two Third Precinct officers pulled over a suspected stolen car with a pair of people inside.
As the officers approached the car, the driver took off, almost hitting one of them. The officer opened fire, and during the mayhem the other officer somehow dropped his gun in the car, police said.
The unarmed officer got into his squad car and took off after the suspect.
So bizarre: how does a suspect get all the way to Brooklyn from Newark at 5:30 PM on a Friday afternoon during rush-hour traffic? Over some of the easiest roadways to blockade in the state? On a snowy day like today??
