Controllers: Airspace redesign causing confusion for pilots at Newark
Every once in a while, a story like this comes along and reminds me just how intricate the dance of aircraft going on over our heads really is.
A new takeoff pattern aimed at easing congestion at Newark Liberty International Airport has confused some pilots and led to several incidents in which planes turned in the wrong direction, according to the union that represents air traffic controllers.
None of the incidents placed planes in imminent danger.

Ask if some of these jet wrong-turns are the very same wrong-turns out of Newark Airport that “Bobby” Sturgell lied about not knowing – under oath, to Senator Frank Lautenberg, Congress, and the American people – in the Sturg-eel’s February 8, 2008 Commerce Committee testimony. Or, alternatively, are these all NEW wrong-turns, never abated since February, 3 months ago? I would appreciate Newark controllers advising.
And how many TOTAL wrong turns have there been? And can we please start lawfully posting these audiotapes to the Internet, which memorialize the justifiable confusion for all to hear?
Moreover, isn’t it reasonably certain that the FAA’s failure and refusal to “publish” the “new” pattern, is simply what they think is a “clever” tactical litigation decision to try to avoid civil and perhaps now criminal culpability, and save their own political skins like shedding reptiles in denial?
So, let me get this straight. Sturgell and FAA are preserving what is a losing paper-and-money litigation position post-GAO and post-D.C. Circuit – and in doing so are putting thousands upon thousands of people, including innocent passengers, homeowners, pilots, and flight crews, in harm’s way at real risk of loss of life – while they sit at Independence and in their DelMarVa McMansions derisively laughing at all of us?
My great air traffic controller friends weren’t kidding when they first told me about these FAA management people last year. These FAA management people are from down below.
