Bathroom upgrade stalls City Hall makeover
Amusing glimpse from last night’s city council meeting by Katie Wang at the Ledger.
But, seriously, how bad are we talking here? Have there been sightings of the council members slipping out the back door of City Hall to use the new restrooms up at the Prudential Center?
On Wednesday, the administration asked the city council to approve an additional $1,067,911 to complete the exterior restoration project. If approved, it would bring the total contract for the work to $19,011,170.
But wait, balked some council members. There was something more pressing on their agenda: the bathrooms.
“They’re just really horrendous,” said Councilman-at-large Donald Payne, Jr. “If we restore anything, I suggest we start with the bathrooms. It goes a long way in how people view coming to work.”
Other council members nodded in agreement. The council and their staff share two bathrooms in the council wing of City Hall and do not have to use the public bathrooms.
Central Ward Councilwoman Dana Rone suggested holding up the additional $1 million until the council gets a contract that includes fixing the bathrooms. The rest of the council agreed.
