On Sunday, May 25th base ball (that’s right two words) as played in the 19th century will return to its roots in Newark’s historic Ironbound. Beginning at 11:00, New Jersey’s third 19th century base ball team, the Newark Eureka will play a doubleheader against the Atlantic Base Ball Club of New York at Riverbank Park.
The original Eureka Base Ball Club was a prominent team of the game’s early years in the 1860’s and had its own “grounds” at the intersection of Ferry and Adams Streets not far from Riverbank Park. Sponsored by the New Jersey Historical Society, the recreated Eureka play by 19th century rules which include no gloves in the field and under hand pitching.
The two teams will gather at the site of the former Eureka “grounds” at about 10:00 for a brief ceremony and then walk to Riverbank Park for the “match” games. There is no admission charge and all are invited to see this recreation of the game’s early days.
