Should Newark save Starbucks?
The Starbucks in downtown Newark is set to close as a result of a cost-cutting initiative at the beleaguered coffee chain. Newarkers have been emailing asking if anything can be done.
In a brief one-liner, I asked Mayor Booker on WBGO if he plans to intervene in the closing. He noted that the would try, but that a local Newark businessman has offered to step in and launch a new coffeeshop at the Starbucks site.
With just a couple of weeks to go before the closure, what do you think? Should Newark save Starbucks?

Actually, there are two Starbucks in Newark. The one closing in downtown and the other is operated by Rutgers-Newark. Mainly college students from NJIT and Rutgers only know about it though. Here is the link

And the Gateway. Why do people keep overlooking the one in the Gateway? Which at times is MUCH busier than Broad St. inspite of its tiny structure and limited hours.

Good riddance to overpriced swill!
The point is not whether you like their coffee or not; it’s that they’re leaving an iconic location like 744 Broad, and that the name brings instant credibility to the city.
Also, they said they were closing only underperforming stores… that place is always busy. Would love to know what criteria they use to determine “underperforming.”
