The spokesman said the two plainclothes officers were heading south on Bergen Street from 14th Avenue when they saw two people, one armed with a handgun, rob bing a third.
“The officers identified themselves and ordered the suspect to drop his weapon, at which time he turned the weapon on the officers,” McClendon said in an e-mailed statement. “One of the officers fired … two rounds striking the armed suspect in the leg and arm.”
Both suspects were taken into custody “without further incident,” and likely will be charged with armed robbery, possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and aggra vated assault on a police officer, McClendon said.
The officers and the robbery victim were not injured. McClendon said that the officers would undergo “a routine examination and counseling,” and that they would probably be granted a “few days” off.
