Leave the lights on
Gallery Aferro’s contribution to the Newark Arts & Music Festival was a film projection onto the back of the old Hahnes building, above the sculpture park. We have had mobile, outdoor film events in development for some time at Aferro, and are soon going to be able to start ofering them to the people of the city of Newark.

For our first public offering I chose a short looped piece derived from a section of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. Much of Newark, like the poem, has the structure and beauty of 19th century forms. I wanted to set the piece to 21st century timing, to the pace of urban life. Someday This Will Be (something else), opening this Saturday, is about memory and landscape. Among their other roles, artists sometimes function (both involuntarily and purposefully) as mediators between the past and the future in cities.
A sudden summer rain necessitated turning the lights off early, but look for us soon, after dark, downtown.
