WNYC has an audio piece covering the Ironbound’s Portuguese and Brazilian heritage and the Portugal Day festival which, by the looks of things on Ferry Street, is already well underway: The Ironbound: The Past, Present and Future of Newark’s Portuguese Community.

For decades, the Ironbound section of Newark has been home to a large community of Portuguese immigrants. Ferry Street in the Ironbound is also known as Portugal Avenue. It’s the site of the largest ethnic festival in New Jersey, and one of the biggest Portuguese gatherings in the world: the Portugal Day street fair and parade. This weekend marks the 28th year of the event, but for the first time the cash-strapped city has cutback its funding. The Ironbound is also facing rapid cultural change. WNYC’s Corey Takahashi has the story.
