I agree that the green enconoy is the future for the placment of ex-incarcerated individuals in living wage jobs. The model thad Sustainable South Bronx www.ssbx.org) has proved viable in large cities is one which should be studied in smalled communities.

I'm a Baltimorean, and having just learned about the efforts of Mayor Booker and the Green Summit I wanted to learn more. I am doing similar work in Baltimore, recruiting ex-offender friendly employers for my expungement clients, spreading the news about the Work Opportunity Tax Credit and it's benefits to small employers and most importantly working to develop Green Career paths for the ex-offender and other marginalized populations. I agree that union jobs are the best paying and can lead to business ownership. At the same time kmoore is correct in pointing out that historically unions have been discriminatory. Thankfully, that is changing, at least in Baltimore. As unions depend upon the size of its membership, dues and the clout these repesent to effect the job market and lobby for the members,it is dificult to diminish the power an influx of thousands of new members represents. At this time a debate has begun as the IBEW lobbys for legistation mandating that only union electricians be allowed to retro-fit older properties with solar panels.

The debate has opened the door for outreach and training opportunities. The Green Economy is the future.

Histrionics notwithstanding, we must remember that unions have in the past, discrininated against the diverse community so in need of employment and careers.

I would be interested to know the demographics of the unions and the representation of the communities that need not only the jobs but the improvements to as well.
