Star Ledger: Off-duty Essex sheriff’s officer is wounded in Newark nightclub, fatally shoots attacker
Newark police are investigating a fatal shooting involving an off-duty Essex County Sheriff’s Officer at a local night club, authorities said. Shortly before 11 p.m. last night at the 600 block of Sanford Avenue, the Essex sheriff’s officer and another man got into an argument, Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura said.
The other man, left the club briefly, but returned inside and shot the officer, Fontoura said. The sheriff’s officer returned fire. Both the Essex officer and the man were rushed to University Hospital, where the man was pronounced dead, Fontoura said.
Update: More facts becoming available:
At an afternoon press conference today, acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert Laurino said a bouncer had asked McNeil to leave the lounge about 10:45 p.m. Sunday because of questionable identification. About 15 minutes later, McNeil returned with a revolver, opened the door and fired a single shot into the foyer, striking Zackery, officials said.
