The victim was shot at least once in the neck at 11:49 p.m. in the 100 block of Mapes Avenue near Bergen Street, said city police spokesman Detective Hubert Henderson.

Sherloc Alphonso was driving his 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee through Ivy Hill Park Monday night when two sheriff’s officers stopped his car, said Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura. The officers approached Alphonso, who said he did not have a valid driver’s license, and say they noticed the smell of alcohol coming from a water bottle filled with a pink liquid.

“It’s just wine,” Alphonso allegedly told them.

Two men were shot in the city’s South Ward Monday night but are expected to survive, police said.

One man was shot in the hand, and the other was shot in the hip in the 300 block of Osborne Terrace shortly after 7 p.m. last night, according to city police spokesman Detective Hubert Henderson.

Superior Court Judge Michael Petrolle sentenced Gaskins to life in prison on the attempted murder conviction Monday, and 30 years on the aggravated manslaughter count.

At about 10 p.m., Newark Police Department’s Central Narcotics and Gang Enforcement Bureau along with the Emergency Services Unit raided house at 43 Clark Street. After chases and a violent struggle, police arrested Anthony Pate, 33, and Leroy Bethea, 32.

Police say the shooting, which occurred just before 3 a.m., may have been spurred by a fight involving the men and some other unidentified people. The parking lot where the shooting occurred is not far from the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in the city’s East Ward.

A Newark woman is accused of arson after she allegedly threatened to burn a house down and kill everyone inside and then proceeded to burn a pile of clothes on top of a stove, authorities said.

Every time Faried Beaton walked into a city club, the popular deejay was greeted by friends who knew the 22 year old as an energetic entertainer who lived to play reggae music at night spots around the city.

The scene wasn’t much different Saturday morning, when friends said Beaton was walking into a party at the Ortega Hall on 6th Avenue just minutes after performing at Newark’s Central Rock. A bouncer told the 22-year-old and his friends the club was closing for the night, and Beaton started walking away when an unidentified party-goer bumped into him, started an argument, and drew a gun.

Beaton simply told the gunman “there’s no need for all that” and turned toward his car.

But, for reasons his family can’t understand, the man shot him anyway.

Officers responded to the scene outside 41 17th Avenue shortly before 8 p.m. tonight, where they found the victim had sustained a gunshot wound to the torso, said city police spokesman Detective Todd McClendon. The man was taken to University Hospital last night with non-life threatening injuries, said McClendon.
