Events Commemorate ‘67 Civil Disturbances

The city is host to a number of events today to remember the 26 people whose lives were lost during the civil disturbances of 1967. The “nj.com 1967 Memorial”:http://blog.nj.com/ledgernewark/2007/06/july_12.html has a full listing of the events, among them:

* The *city will fly flags at half-staff* through July 17, marking the six days of the uprising (all day, City Hall)
* A *plaque dedication at the Police 4th Precinct* building, the flashpoint of the civil unrest when black cab driver John Smith was beaten and hauled in by two white police officers (10am, 17th Street and Irvine Turner Boulevard)
* Booker will kick off the *free screenings of “Revolution ‘67″* the City of Newark will host free screenings of the controversial “Point Of View”:http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2007/revolution67/index.html documentary. Each screening will be introduced by a guest speaker with a discussion with the film’s creators, Marylou and Jerome Bongiorno, to follow. (12pm, Newark Screens)
* The Institute on Ethnicity, Culture and the Modern Experience will host a *discussion with former Governor and 1967 Essex County Prosecutor Brendan Byrne* (4pm, Newark Museum, Ballantine House, 49 Washington St.) — _Free but space is limited and reservations are required 973-353-5414 ext 11_
* The “People’s Organization for Progress”:http://www.nj.com/starledger/stories/index.ssf?/base/news-0/118421462032840.xml&coll=1 will sponsor a *Memorial March* begins at 4th Precinct building and ends at memorial site at corner of Irvine Turner Boulevard and Springfield Avenue (5:30pm, 17th St and Irvine Turner Blvd)
* WBGO 88.3 FM will host the fifth *Newark Today* with David Cruz. The call-in show enables listeners to speak directly with the mayor live. Joining the mayor tomorrow in commemoration of the anniversary of the 1967 disturbances will be Activist Richard Camerieri, New York Times reporter Ron Smothers and Newark Historian Clement Price (8pm, 88.3 FM call in 800-499-9246)
* A viewing and discussion of *Slow Road Back*, a 1987 an award-winning documentary by Sandra King to mark the 20th anniversary of the Newark rebellion; the discussion to follow will host Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Rutgers Historian Clement Price, New Community Founder William Linder and North Ward Center Founder Steve Adubato (9pm, check local listings for NJN)
