Most bamboo can be broadly classified into two categories of clumping bamboo or a running bamboo. The former is a slow grower whereas those falling the latter category grows really fast. Some well-known clumping bamboo are Chinese Mountain Timor Black White Dragon and Candy Cane. Examples of running bamboo includes Golden Grove Yellow Grove Golden Square and Dwarf White-stripe.
If you are serious about planting bamboo then you might have more sue for the clumping bamboo type. This type grows up and wide as any other plant does but the circumferential growth is more controlled. As long as you do not allow its circumference to grow uncontrollably then its height can also grow with limits. Unless you have a vast expanse of planting space then you should avoid planting the running bamboo. This type of bamboo takes up a lot of ground space as it uses underground rhizomes to expand.
