CITY OF NEWARK CELEBRATES HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH WITH
2ND ANNUAL “FESTIVAL DE LA FAMILIA LATINA”
ON BLOOMFIELD AVENUE, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4
Festival celebrates Latino art, culture, folkloric music;
Festival will take place between Lake Street and Clifton Avenue from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Newark, NJ – September 24, 2009 - Mayor Cory A. Booker, The Newark Municipal Council, Deputy Mayor of Neighborhood Engagement Margarita Muñiz and La Casa de Don Pedro Executive Director Raymond Ocasio announced today that the 2nd Annual “Festival de la Familia Latina” will take place on Sunday, October 4, on Bloomfield Avenue between Lake Street and Clifton Avenue, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, this annual festival will celebrate Latino arts and culture with a wide array of fun family-oriented activities, and information from key community stakeholders in government, non-profit, and community organizations.
“Newark’s Latino community has much to celebrate,” said Mayor Booker. “It has a proud past, a vibrant present, and an exciting future. The strength of our Latino community is rooted in its families, and the Festival de La Familia Latina will celebrate and strengthen those families. I urge all Newark residents to come out and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with us.”
Major sponsors for this festival are the County of Essex, La Casa de Don Pedro, Rutgers-Newark, The Newark Public Library, The Newark Museum, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and the Newark Urban Enterprise Zone. Also participating will be El Club del Barrio, Inc. and Aspira Inc.
“It is a great privilege to host Newark’s 2nd Annual ‘Festival de la Familia Latina’ in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Newark’s diversity of culture is what makes our City so unique, and the Hispanic community has long contributed to the fabric of our City, state and nation,” said Deputy Mayor Muñiz.
Entertainment and activities set for the day include performances by Ray Rodriguez y Su Swing Sabroso, Cuban Link and many more.
