MAYOR BOOKER REMINDS NEWARK RESIDENTS:
NO BULK TRASH COLLECTION OR STREET-SWEEPING ON WEDNESDAY
Street-sweeping and bulk trash collection cancelled November 11, for Veterans’ Day
Newark, NJ – November 9, 2009 - Mayor Cory A. Booker and Director of Neighborhood and Recreational Services Melvin Waldrop announced today that there will be no street-sweeping or bulk trash collection on Wednesday, November 11, 2009, in observance of the Veterans’ Day holiday. Many non-emergency municipal services will be halted and City Hall will be closed that day.
“Veterans’ Day is increasingly becoming one of our most poignant holidays, as we honor the courage of men and women who have served our country, protecting our liberties, sacrificing their lives in our defense. Their valor defines us as a nation,” Mayor Booker said. “I urge all residents to take time on this holiday to honor our service members past and present, and to remember those killed in the tragedy at Fort Hood last week.”
Trash pick-ups will take place as scheduled on Thursday morning. “Residents must place their refuse at their curbs before 6 a.m. on Thursday, November 12th, and pick-ups will be made as regularly scheduled,” Director Waldrop said.
Anyone with questions about trash collection and street sweeping should contact the Department of Neighborhood and Recreational Services at (973) 733-3644. Residents with any questions about municipal services, can contact the Non-emergency Call Center at (973) 733-4311.

Its six major colleges and universities are further expanding their presence. The production of affordable housing has doubled, businesses are returning and crime is going down. There is still much work to be done but Newark is on its way to achieving its mission: to set a national standard for urban transformation.
