A shooting in the city’s Central Ward has left one dead and another critically wounded. That makes the homicide count 31 for the year so far — which police would like to say is “down” from 32 last year, but we’ll call that flat.

Last night’s double shooting took place on Hunterdon Street, Detective Todd McClendon said. Both victims were shot in the torso, the detective added.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene, and the second victim, a male, was taken to University Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, the detective said.
The names and ages of the victims were not immediately available. Police were investigating a possible motive, but they did not release additional details.
Arrests have already been made in the investigation, according to the ??1010 Wins?? coverage: “Arrests Made in Connection With Fatal Shooting in Newark”:http://1010wins.com/pages/411745.php?contentType=4&contentId=461963.

King Sau, a leader of a Newark anti-violence group called the Street Warriors, harbored a dream that his troubled 25-year-old son would one day follow him into community activism.
Instead, his boy ended up a victim of the violence he preached against.
Saud Goosby was found by police Tuesday night behind the steering wheel of a parked car on Hunterdon Street, shot multiple times. Beside him was Alwahid Moses, 25, who was also shot and remains in critical condition at University Hospital.
Police don’t know why the men were attacked. But they said they were looking for clues in their criminal records. Both were suspected drug dealers.
“We believe this is a drug-related shooting,” Newark Mayor Cory Booker said.
Goosby, police said, had 10 ar rests and two convictions on weapons and drug-related crimes. Records show he was on probation at the time of his death. Moses has nine arrests and five convictions for robbery, carjacking, aggravated as sault and receiving stolen property, police said.
