A Newark police union declared war on Police Director Garry McCarthy today, asking a Superior Court judge to bar him from running most aspects of the force.
The union asked that a judge keep McCarthy from imposing discipline, running the department’s weekly Compstat crime-intelligence meetings and operating a city-owned police car. That would leave McCarthy on bigger picture issues, like setting policy.
The lawsuit clearly rankled McCarthy, a 25-year veteran of the New York Police Department who served as its chief crime strategist.
“I thought we came here to fight criminals and save lives,” McCarthy said. “Instead I’m finding I have to fight a renegade union head who apparently has different agendas.”
Ugh, why is it that Newark’s embedded unions seem to picture themselves as guardians of the status quo?
