New York Times: Detective Charged With Sex Abuse

A veteran Newark police detective was charged with sexually abusing a teenage girl from West Orange repeatedly during a span of four years, according to the Essex County prosecutor’s office.

The detective, Vernon Parker, a resident of Hillside who has been a police officer in Newark for more than 10 years, surrendered late Friday and was charged with eight counts of aggravated sexual assault and four counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, said Paul Loriquet, a spokesman for the prosecutor.

The girl, now 17, told school officials on Friday that the detective had assaulted her on several occasions between 2002 and 2006, when she was between the ages of 12 and 16, Mr. Loriquet said. Those allegations were passed on to the State Department of Youth and Family Services, which contacted the prosecutor’s office, he said.
