Star Ledger: Housing agency seeks renters at its HQ

Housing agency seeks renters at its HQ
Yikes! Here’s hoping we don’t see a “For Rent” sign hanging outside of City Hall anytime soon.

The Newark Housing Authority has laid off more than 300 workers and privatized a number of functions over the last two years to save money. Now the agency is planning to rent out space in its headquarters at 500 Broad St. to help offset federal funding cuts.

Included in a packet handed out at a recent meeting with city business leaders was a flier adver tising the availability of 10,000 square feet of office space “in a great location.” “Spacious offices, carpeted floors, utilities and easy access to Newark’s light rail and bus systems,” read the advertise ment which included a picture of the six-story building at 500 Broad St.

“We keep getting squeezed from every angle so we keep trying to figure out ways to increase revenue,” said Tory Gunsolley, the authority’s chief administrative officer.
