Title: 2008 CAPOEIRA ENCOUNTER
Location: City Hall Rotunda
Description: The City of Newark will be joined by local and international performers to host the 2008 International Capoeira Encounter. The event, which will take place in the Newark City Hall Rotunda on Friday, May 23 at 7 PM, will treat residents to performances by some of the best Capoeira performers from Brazil, Europe and the United States in celebration of this centuries’ old art form.
Characterized by its combination of evasive fighting technique, acrobatic skill and musical rhythm, Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that originated more than 400 years ago on the sugarcane plantations of Brazil. At a time when enslaved Africans were restricted or forbidden entirely from practicing combat methods from their culture, Capoeira was often used as a means of preserving traditional dance and other customs indigenous to African heritage.
Performers will include students and instructors from Capoeira academies in and around the Newark area, as well as from top institutions around the world. The event has been organized in conjunction with the New Jersey/New York branch of Grupo Cultural Senzala de Capoeira – one of world’s oldest and largest Capoeira groups – which trains at A Fit Above Fitness Center, located in Newark’s Ironbound section.
Friday’s event marks the second year that the City of Newark has hosted the Capoeira Encounter. Last year’s celebration drew Capoeira professionals and students from the United States, Brazil, and France. Residents are greatly encouraged to attend and there is no admission charge.
