Former Newark Mayor Sharpe James returns to court this afternoon for what could be a final bid to overturn his corruption conviction and avoid being sentenced later this month.

Such motions rarely succeed. In a letter to the judge, defense attorney Alan Zegas said he recognized such a ruling might be viewed as usurping the role of the jury.
