Heads Up: Demolition Task Force to Raze Abandoned Properties

Demolition Task Force to Raze Abandoned Properties
This weekend I received a letter from a member of a tenant’s association concerned about abandoned properties being a major source of difficulty for their neighborhood. Apart from the blighted streetscape, abandoned properties can encourage drug dealing (a major source of the city’s violent crime) and squatting by the homeless. It will be interesting to see where the city chooses to direct its efforts.

Mayor Cory A. Booker will be joined by Deputy Mayor of Economic Development and Housing Stefan Pryor, West Ward Councilmember Ronald C. Rice, Director of Neighborhood and Recreational Services Melvin Waldrop, and Director of Housing and Real Estate Michael Meyer on Tuesday, July 29, at 1:30 p.m. to announce the formation of the City’s Demolition Task Force, at 200 12th Avenue.

The Mayor will discuss the City’s plans to demolish neglected and abandoned properties throughout Newark.
